Biography
After graduating from the University of Oregon in 1999 with a degree in linguistics, I received a scholarship to study Thai at Chiang Mai University, and have remained in Thailand ever since. After working several years at a stable job, I made the questionable decision to pursue a career as a freelance photographer/writer. This choice has since taken me as far as northern Pakistan, and as near as Bangkok’s Or Tor Kor Market. The bulk of the work I do is food-related.
I write and photograph for Lonely Planet, and my writings and photos have been published in magazines and newspapers such as appetite, Bangkok Post, Chile Pepper, Insight Guides, lifestyle + travel, The Nation, Olive, Orient-Express, Sawasdee, ThaiDay and The Wall Street Journal Asia.
For examples of my magazine and newspaper work, the following articles are available for download in PDF format:
- “Breakfast in Trang”, ThaiDay July 2006
- “eat away: Bangkok”, Olive, January 2007
- “Eating the Island”, ThaiDay July, 2006
- “From Kebab to Nan”, Chile Pepper, February 2007
- “The Lost Pepper of Cambodia,” Chile Pepper Feb 2008
- “Phnom Penh’s Golden Breads”, appetite, April/May 2007
- “Real Phat Thai”, Intermezzo, December 2007
I have contributed photography and/or text to the following books:

Lonely Planet’s Vietnam guidebook.-

Insight Guide’s Thailand’s Beaches and Islands.
Lonely Planet’s Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos & the Greater Mekong guidebook.-

Lonely Planet’s Bangkok Encounter guidebook.
