Unsustainable practices like this are causing irreparable damage to the natural environment all over the world and we should not be complacent about them, even while we acknowledge the reasons why they occur. Ultimately the locals will suffer the consequences when the ecosystem collapses. I've been following your blog for a long while. Keep up the good work. Thailand is in a fog of smoke right now for the very same reason. Nothing special about this practice in Laos. As for the animals, isn't that what local people eat? Not nice but a way of life?
