Hi Austin,

My wife & her parents are gonna be in Bangkok for 4 days from the 15th of August. They are Vegetarians & love the way the Thais, Vietnamese & Chinese make vegetarian. Can you please, please quickly recommend a few places they can eat at? Thanks a lot. Love your web-site! Regards, Darshak Mehta, Sydney.

I'd recommend the Som Tum over at Ao-Ta-Kor market. According to my colleague the owner has won numerous awards on her staple thai dish.

Soi Convent has a wide variety of food on Wheels or stalls as well.

You're right about the hierarchy, but the mall food courts are very hit and miss. It's almost like a circle, as once you've experienced the street food you can get the best out of the mall food.
In terms of upmarket, Baan Khanitha is ok, and the Thai restuarant Tamnan Thai on Sukhumvit (Times square basement) has some good dishes. I like the restaurant on the top floor of Central Bangna (with tables overlooking the escalator), but everything is in Thai (taxing my ability to order!). There's a good, and apparently famous, restaurant on Soi Udomsuk, about 2km from Sukhumvit on the right.
Street food: Suttisan market, Soi St Louis, Th. Chan. But of course, these are just the areas I go to.
The one thing I would say is that the food in any of these places is rarely consistent - you can get delicious somtum one time and then next visit have the most vile concoction ever. It makes recommendation hard!

mr. t: I'm trying to be pragmatic about Thai food. I agree with you about the uni neighbourhoods (I live near Kaset U), but wanted to choose places that would be easiest for visitors. Yala is kinda very dangerous right now! I was there about six years ago and still remember a wonderful dish of khao yam made by a Muslim vendor.

ed: I hope it helps! Let me know if you have any more questions.

mama bok: Uh... what about them? They're really just weird ingredients in a sweet broth!

rasa: I would be honored to be on the receiving or giving end of that offer! When do you reckon you'll be in BKK again?

Austin, thanks for the recommendations. The next time I stop over in BKK, I will call you up...then you can be my food guide. Likewise, if you go to Penang again and I happen to be around, I will take you around!! :)

I never thought of this "food heirarchy" before but it indeed makes sense.

My only other input is to that some great "food neighborhoods" exist adjacent to major universities (albeit of the street food variety). I'm thinking of Ramkhamhaeng and Kaset if you are in the northern part of the city.

By the way when are you going to do a Hat Yai food trip Austin? Or a Yala food trip? You may enjoy the "Khao Mok Gai Yala" very much.
